Reg [juLA]’s Layers is an attempt to aestheticize deterioration, the sound of pulling together fading scraps of jazz and other low-key samples and letting the decay extend a little bit longer. While even the fuzziest beat tapes often exude boldness through their attempts to get the body moving, Layers is an incredibly fragile thing, oftentimes on the verge of collapsing in on itself. This one’s as much William Basinski and The Caretaker as J Dilla and Brainfeeder, a delicate rendering of the beat that fractures its own momentum in exquisite lo-fi.
